"We have long complained about the people who will drive into the intersection knowing they cannot possibly get through. Doing further research, I found an article from December 1987 which includes a quote from a police officer showing the original intent of the law ( : This would include drivers who honestly thought they could it through an intersection but could not. The above law simply states that a vehicle shouldn't enter if there isn't sufficient space. However, I'm not sure if poor road design is a valid argument in defeating the ticket. My main argument is that the traffic light on the which caused the gridlock (about 400 feet away from the intersection) was not visible from behind the limit line, thus I could not see the potential gridlock. I planning to contest this ticket in court, but I am unsure if I can win. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no violation point shall be given for a conviction of a violation of Section 22526. However, this violation is not a violation point, according to section 12810.4: "Notwithstanding any official traffic control signal indication to proceed, a driver of a vehicle shall not enter an intersection or marked crosswalk unless there is sufficient space on the other side of the intersection or marked crosswalk to accommodate the vehicle driven without obstructing the through passage of vehicles from either side" Some weeks later, I got several letters in the mail telling me I was charged with violating vc 25526a, or the "anti-gridlock law". After about 7 seconds, my lane of cars finally started moving and I got through.Ī police officer pulled me over shortly, and told me I couldn't stop in an intersection. My traffic light turned yellow and then red, and I got stuck in the middle of the intersection while the cars on the opposite side had the green light. Since I was already past the limit line, I had no choice but to continue forward and hope the intersection would clear. I crossed the limit line on a green light, but then realized that I would be stuck in the middle of the intersection because the long rows of cars in front of me were headed toward another traffic light, which was red. This is the first time I attempted to make this turn during a busy traffic hour. While driving along an expressway one day, I was attempting to make a left turn. My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: California
